Dear Juno,

I was impressed with some of the decisions you made. I thought it was okay to have the baby. I thought it was a good idea that you gave it to someone who could take care of it. I think that getting pregnant at a very young age was not a good idea. I think avoiding sex at a very young age would have been better. You should have told your parents right when you knew you were pregnant. However, I think what you did was noble. You had planned to give the baby to a married couple. Unfortunately, the couple got divorced prior to the adoption so your baby was still going to be raised by a single mother. This was very upsetting for you Juno because you had become friends with the adopted father.

If I got a girl pregnant the first thing I would do is I would tell my parents. I would tell the girl to tell her parents right away that she was pregnant. I think it would be important to have your parents there to help guide you. And I would suggest she get an abortion as soon as possible. And I would tell her I’m not ready to be a father yet. I need to go to college and be able to earn a living before having children. Finally, I would tell her the decision is hers to make.

Because I believe in birth control I would take every precaution, but if a girl lied to me and told me she was taking birth control pills, I would feel justified in recommending an early term abortion. My feeling would be that I made a mistake having sex with a girl I was not in a position to marry. It is my belief teens should practice abstinence until they are old enough to make adult decisions. Having a child changes your life forever Juno and it was irresponsible of you to engage in pre- marital sex.

My opinion on abortion is that a woman should have the right to choose one if she cannot provide a father and support for her child. I also believe in instances of rape it is especially important for a woman to be able to have an abortion. I only believe in very early term abortion when the fetus is still a small number of cells and has not yet taken the form of a human baby. I feel it is wrong to have an abortion once the fetus is a recognizable human baby. The only exception is if the mother’s life is threatened due to the pregnancy.
The 14th amendment known as the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by Congress in 1972. In 1973 the Supreme Court heard a case, Roe v. Wade, and passed an amendment to the ERA that said women had the right to terminate a pregnancy. This was very controversial and there were never enough states to ratify the amendment and it finally died on June 30 1982. The 14th Amendment provided that “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” This amendment has been used to argue the right of a woman to choose regarding abortion.

Abortion law varies from state to state. However, the principles of Roe v. Wade have been adopted in many states. The U.S. Senate Judiciary committee issued the following statement as a general guide line in 1983: “Thus, the (Judiciary) committee observes that no significant legal barriers of any kind what so ever exist today in the United States for a woman to obtain an abortion for any reason during any stage of her pregnancy.”

Current California law has no restrictions on abortion and pro- choice is protected by the state constitution. Abortion is still a controversial subject, and laws vary greatly from state to state.

In the end, it is up to each person to make choices based on their own beliefs and morals.

Sincerely,
Matt
